Congress president and Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi Monday visited over a dozen villages in her constituency to check development works there. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson landed in Lucknow around 9 a.m. and later left for Rae Bareli where she will spend three days. She visited over a dozen villages, including Kurli Sudauli, Despur, Akhileshwar, Rajamau, Chauhaniya, Pahadpur, Hasratulganj villages, state congress spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap singh told IANS. Sonia held meetings and inquired about the development works there, particularly about the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), a flagship programme of the UPA government, Singh said. “Her main focus was on the NREGS and development schemess and how effectively they are being implemented by the state government,” Diptani Srivastava, block head of a self help group, said. Later in the evening, Sonia also attended a closed door meeting with party office bearers and members. “During her three-day visit, she will visit rural parts of Rae Bareli and will also hold meetings with the party workers,” Singh said. On Tuesday, she will inaugurate the newly constructed building of the Feroz Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology, and Wednesday the customer care building of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in Rae Bareli. “Sonia will be visiting over a dozen villages every day during her stay in Rae Bareli,” Singh added.
